A Guide to the Lake District - Levens & Brigsteer

A little about Levens

Levens is situated on the edge of the English Lake District some 5 miles south of Kendal, just outside Milnthorpe & Heversham on the A6. Levens most famous aspect is Levens Hall, situated just outside the village of Levens, The village of Levens is a very quaint typical Lake District village, has a handful of shops and pubs one being the Gilpin Inn situated at Gilpin Bridge on the outskirts of the Lythe Valley. Levens has many places suitable for scenic walks and the perfect terrain for mountain biking, Levens is best incorporated on a mountain bike ride as a scenic break, it boasts a view across the Lythe Valley and towards the peaks of the Lake District.

Levens Hall

Levens is most famous for Levens Hall and its famous topiary gardens, Levens Hall is the first house in the Levens area dating from circa 1350, built by de Redman family to fend of Scottish raiders. It was firstly a primitive pele tower, with underhousing in the time of raids for women & cattle. Levens Hall was constructed around the Elizabethan period, the Bellingham enbelished the structure with fine wooden panelling and plasterwork still seen today.
Col. James Grahme added many fine examples of Jacobean furniture, built two wings at the rear of Levens Hall, thus forming a courtyard in 1694, all building work was completed with the Howard Tower in 1820.

Levens Hall today brings visitors from all over the world, as a visitor you will see the finest Elizabethan rooms - a dining room elegantly embossed with Cordova leather wall-coverings and elegant elizabethan bedrooms. Levens Hall exhibits a fine selection of paintings through out the whole house including family memorabilia (connections
even the earliest English Patchwork dated 1708, however arguably Levens Halls most famous point is its variety of
tales of ghostly happenings.
