A Guide to the Lake District - Eskdale

A little about Eskdale

Eskdale hidden deep in the heart of the Lake District, the river Esk starts high in the fells at Esk Hause, it then passes through Great Moss, close to the foot of Scafell Pike following through a series of waterfalls. The River Esk flows past the foot of the Hardknott Pass England's steepest road. The River Esk passes through some of the most beautiful oak forest in the Lake district. We have The Esk to thank for carving this scenic landscape with Lake district peaks, fast flowing waterfalls and rolling green meadows."

The Lake Districts Eskdale has many paths, lanes and bridle ways to explore till your hearts content, the valley is home to one of The Lake Districts most scenic rivers the River Esk a maze of paths to adventure around many welcoming places for drinking and eating. The experienced walker & climber will be completely at home in the Lake Distrcits Eskdale with access to some of the best mountains in the UK.

The valley consists of 3 typical Lake District villages - Eskdale Green, Boot & Ravenglass, there is a Narrow Gauge Railway, Castle, 2 Corn Mills, Galleries, many campsites & 7 Inns of course theres much to explore.

The Ravenglass to Eskdale Railway - Why not travel by Steam to the Hills

Over 120,000 visitors a year travel on the Eskdale locomotives, the steam railway line from Ravenglass on the coast, passes through Miterdale, to Dalegarth, the steam railway is 7-miles long. From March to November theres a minimum of 7 steam trains a day. Trains also run most winter weekends, between Christmas and the New Year and through the February half-term.

Muncaster castle,gardens & Owl centre

Muncaster Castle, the castle has had the Pennington family at the helm for over 800 years, Muncaster Castle a treasure trove of art and antiques. There is a Great Hall, octagonal library and elegant dining room. The castle evolved from the Pele Tower, built to repel marauding Scots very similar to Levens Hall. Many who have stayed at Muncaster Castle say it is haunted by ghosts, the most famous being Tom Fool. Take a look at the Tapestry room if your feeling brave. Why not have a look at the Meadow Vole Maze. You will also find a range wildlife on the wing at including many Owls at the Muncaster Castle Owl centre or if you prefer plants take a look at the thousands of exotic plants in the Himalayan Gardens

Boot Mill Eskdale

The mill can trace its history back to 1578 and is one of the oldest in England with 18th century oatmeal machinery driven by two 12ft. overshot waterwheels, working daily. Originally belonging to the lord of the manor, and sold to yeoman Edward Hartley in 1737, with the promise not to build nearby any water cornmill. It is now owned by Cumbria County Council, who maintain the mill as a unique and unspoiled insight into a past way of life.

Open April To September from 11-5 except Monday.

Evening guided tours for small groups can be arranged- just call at the mill.
